Healthcare, law, and skilled labour shortages have been recognised as critical areas for regional cooperation.

This was highlighted through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Cook Islands Government and the Fijian Government.

The MoU for Development Cooperation aims to bring together both countries for the benefit of the thousands of Fijians residing in the Cook Islands and Cook Islands citizens who have contributed their expertise in Fiji.

On the sidelines of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Rarotonga, Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka signed the MoU.

Brown stated: “This is an important step in our relationship as two countries, two peoples with very long-standing and deep relationships.”

He emphasised that the MoU is just the first step in strengthening ties between the two nations.

Rabuka explained that the bilateral agreement focuses on economic and social services. He underscored that this is a significant step in enhancing stronger ties between the two countries, recognising the importance of regional cooperation.

Rabuka remarked, “Thousands of Fijians have been instrumental in the Cook Islands’ development, and Cook Island citizens have contributed their expertise in Fiji. It's a win-win situation for both nations!”

He reiterated their commitment to strengthening these bonds and supporting each other, expressing optimism for the future of their partnership.

Regarding the question of direct flights between the two countries, Rabuka clarified that this is not currently being discussed.
