Atiu Enua celebrated the swearing-in of their new mayor and Island Council members on Wednesday at the CICC Sunday School Hall in Mapumai.

The vibrant ceremony began with the audience breaking into song and cheering for each member as they took their seats.

Atiu had no changes to its final count from the preliminary result of the Island Government Election held last month. From the 239 registered voters, 232 hit the polls on August 15, 2024, with 79 voting in Timaau Ariki James Smith Mokoroa the new mayor.

Mokoroa said he was pleased to see the support from the community at the swearing-in ceremony and acknowledged the people for their support.

He is keen to start working with the council members for the benefit of the island and its people.

Justice of the Peace Maara Tairi issued the warrants to the successful candidates. He was supported by Mata Takioa, the Pa Enua governance officer from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).

According to the Office of the Prime Minister, Health Minister Vainetutai Rose Toki Brown, one of the two MPs from the island, put out a “call for unity to work together”.

Brown acknowledged the people of Atiu for their support and “fostering community spirit” on the island.

“Your family support system and children will always hold you in good stead.”

Vaine Paretoa, the Aronga Mana representative, conveyed his sentiments also calling for unity and working together as a team for Atiu.

The Atiu Island Council for the term of four years are: Mayor - Timaau Ariki James Smith Mokoroa, Areora Council member - Teaumarae Glassie, Tengatangi Council member - Tearikiemaema Teiotu (uncontested), Teenui Council member - Tinga Arai (uncontested), Ngatiarua Council member - Vainerere Touna, Mapumai Council member - Ezekiela Patukura.
