Defending champions Tupapa Panthers remain in the hunt for top place finish in the Cook Islands Rugby Union Rarotonga Club 15s competition.

Panthers secured a gritty 20-11 victory over the Arorangi Bears at Aretere Park in Avatiu on Saturday, showcasing their resilience and skill after an unexpected loss in the first round.

The Bears initially led with a narrow 11-8 margin at halftime, sparking hopes of another upset against the reigning champions. However, the second half belonged to the Panthers, who demonstrated their class and composure.

Right winger Pita Senibiakula was super charged on the field, astounding with his speed and precision as he completed a double, while the dynamic Peniasi “Flash” Dakuwaqa, French Top 14 player on holiday here, added a crucial try, breaking through the Bears’ defense with his trademark agility and flair.

The Bears scored through Andrew Purua and penalties from Basil Matapo and Kave Mocedeki.

The Bears’ standout performers were their industrious forwards, with Tanire Mokoroa displaying relentless energy, Totoa Tauia delivering powerful drives, and Andrew Purua leading with sheer determination. On the Panthers’ side, the front row trio of Davey Mato, Lua Tua, and Kana Nga were formidable, using their strength and tenacity to dominate the scrums and maintain relentless pressure throughout the match.

On Friday, table toppers Avatiu Nikao Eels delivered a dominant performance on their home ground, overwhelming the Titikaveka Bulldogs with a decisive 50-8 victory.

One of the standout moments of the game was the incredible hat-trick by 17-year-old left winger, Anapa Nicholas. His third try, scored late in the second half, saw him weave through five desperate defenders, a testament to his agility and skill.

At halftime, the Eels were comfortably ahead, leading 26-3, and they continued to pile on the points in the second half.

Despite their best efforts, the Bulldogs struggled to maintain possession, making it difficult for them to build momentum. Their lone try was a spectacular 80-metre dash by Cook Islands 7s star, Brian Akava, a brief but thrilling highlight in an otherwise challenging match.

The best performers for the Bulldogs included the dynamic backline duo of Tangi and Brian Akava, right winger Kaleb Chase, and veteran prop Kena “Taumalolo” Vaomotou.

For the Eels, it was Anapa Nicholas who stole the show, supported by the powerful centre Villiami Temo and the relentless loose forwards Li Ponini and Wally Tangata.
