Northern islands back on line

Wednesday 1: Four northern islands were unable to receive or make phone calls on Monday.

In a media statement released yesterday, Telecom Cook Islands says the problem occurred during the changeover from the NSS-5 satellite to the new NSS-9 satellite that took place on Monday afternoon.

“Unfortunately with the islands of Pukapuka, Nassau, Palmerston and Manihiki, they encountered problems and were off-line for a few hours,” Telecom says.

“This was due to the fact that the down converter was a bit off frequency so the engineers from the Instelsat and Telecom had to reset the antennae accordingly.”

Technicians worked through the night and phone connection to Manihiki and Pukapuka was restored around 8.15am yesterday. Nassau and Palmerston were back online around 11.16am on Tuesday.

“Telecom would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused,” they say. - TCI
