The Cook Islands Rugby Union (CIRU) is gearing up for a fantastic conclusion to their 2024 season with an exciting Awards Ceremony to be held this weekend.

This event aims to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and achievements of local rugby clubs and players.

Set to be held on Saturday, August 31, at the Aroa Nui Hall in Arorangi, the ceremony promises to be a memorable evening for everyone involved.

Ben Koteka, CIRU's development manager, expressed his gratitude for the successful season during his finals match report, highlighting the positive growth in local rugby and thanking all supporters and sponsors for elevating the sport to greater heights.

Koteka hopes to continued support to raise the standards of rugby union in the Cook Islands, building on the momentum from this year's success.

As anticipation builds, CIRU has released a list of nominees for various categories, recognising standout performances from the 2024 rugby season.

The Best Backline category showcases some of the finest talents in both men's and women's rugby.

In the men’s division, the nominees are Taio Taio (Arorangi Bears), Teariki Matenga (Titikaveka Bulldogs), Tamatoa Nicholas (Avatiu Eels), and Jason Potoru (Tupapa Panthers).

For the women’s category, Mahana Sijp from the Lady Panthers and Anillia Heather from the Lady Bears will be competing for the top spot.

For Best Forward award, the competition is equally fierce. On the men’s side, Dabiel Tonorio (Arorangi Bears), Peter Lagilagi (Titikaveka Bulldogs), Penitito Lio (Avatiu Eels), and Kana Nga (Tupapa Panthers) have all been recognised for their efforts. In the women’s division, June Willie from the Lady Panthers and Feliza Nicholas from the Lady Bears are the ones to watch.

The Most Improved Player category acknowledges those who have shown significant development throughout the season.

Men’s nominees include Henry Mataio (Arorangi Bears), Rqaykon Marsters (Titikaveka Bulldogs), Anapa Nicholas (Avatiu Eels) and Pita Senibiukula (Tupapa Panthers).

For the women, Erica Tumutoa (Lady Panthers) and Zoey Twiggs (Lady Bears) have earned nominations.

Lastly, the Rookie of the Year category celebrates emerging talent.

For the men, nominees include Henry Mataio (Arorangi Bears), Tangimetua Akava (Titikaveka Bulldogs), Jeremiah Tutangata (Avatiu Eels), and Malakai Nikoro (Tupapa Panthers). Women’s nominees are Shae Te Whata (Lady Panthers) and Aikitu Mose (Lady Bears).

There will be awards for juniors in various categories.
