One win at Adelaide Sevens

Monday 6: The Cook Islands national sevens squad began their Adelaide Sevens campaign in promising style.

The team faced South Africa in their first pool D match

and despite losing 28-7, there were some outstanding plays by the team.

In particular, sprightly winger Jamal Brogan with his explosive style of play put the Cooks in the position to score their first try.

Brogan ran sharp angles and making use of his support popped the ball to local veteran sevens star Nathan Robinson who continued the forward movement created by Brogan.

A wide pass back into the field found the hands of Adam Vardey who had a clear run to the try line for the Cooks only try against South Africa.

The Cook’s also showed great improvement in their defence, however there is still work to be done in this area and no doubt coach Ramsay Tomokino already has future training plans for the team.

The Cooks were dealt a 27-0 beating by the code’s most improved team, Kenya.

Kenya went on to face South Africa in the cup finals of the competition but lost the encounter 26-7.

The Cooks also fell to unranked Japan 20-12 to face USA in the bowl quarter finals.

The Cooks found their form against the USA beating the American side 31-19 to go through to the bowl semi

finals against France but France were determined to take away a trophy at the Adelaide sevens.

France won the match 35-14 but lost out to Samoa in the bowl finals 35-14. - Matariki Wilson
