The Avatiu Eels have made history with an extraordinary accomplishment, achieving a clean sweep in the 2024 rugby seasons across both league and union codes under the leadership of coach Clive Nicholas.

This remarkable feat has set a new record, bringing immense pride to the community and marking a significant milestone in Avatiu Eels Sports Club.

The journey to this historic win was led by the outstanding leadership of Nicholas, who has consistently demonstrated his ability to achieve remarkable feats in rugby.

Under his guidance, the Avatiu Eels have reached new heights, showcasing their resilience throughout the 2024 season.

Nicholas, known for his strategic thinking and deep understanding of the game, has brought a wealth of experience and a “rugby, rugby” mindset back to the club, focusing on the fundamentals of 15s rugby.

His efforts have paid off tremendously, as the former national rep has clinched numerous titles in the 2023/24 season, including a bronze medal at the Pacific Games (SPG), back-to-back domestic Nines trophies, consecutive Round Cup League titles, the League Season Trophy, and the Town versus Country Rugby League Series title alongside Darren Piri.

The latest glory in the Rarotonga Clubs 15s title over the weekend, achieved with the assistance of his coaching partner Okesene Moananu, is the pinnacle of this record-breaking season.

For Nicholas, this victory is especially humbling.

Reflecting on the journey, he shares that the stress and hard work have paid off, leading to an unprecedented season of success for the Eels.

Just a year ago, Nicholas contemplated stepping away from sports entirely to focus on his family.

It was the encouragement and support of rugby league executives Franky Toa and Charles Carlson that reignited his passion, ultimately leading him to take on the role with the Cook Islands Rugby League.

This decision has proven to be transformative, not only for Nicholas but also for the Avatiu Eels and the broader community.

“I have no regrets staying on and contributing to my country and my village of Avatiu-Nikao,” Nicholas said. His commitment and dedication have been instrumental in the team’s success, and his leadership has inspired a new generation of rugby players on the island.

Nicholas draws his motivation from the support of his family, who have stood by him through thick and thin. His journey with the team has also been bolstered by the incredible backing of sponsors such as Rarocars, Cook Islands Steel, Onu Sportswear, and the Avatiu Nikao Eels Rugby Club.
The commitment of the league executives, who continue to work closely with the players, and the support of Avatiu MP and Deputy Prime Minister Albert Nicholas, have been instrumental in the team's success.

Clive also extends his gratitude to the dedicated supporters, both at home and abroad, who passionately follow and support the team week in and week out. Their collective encouragement and belief in the team have fuelled their drive to achieve greatness this season.
