In a thrilling 80-minute match that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Avatiu Eels emerged victorious over the Tupapa Panthers, clinching the 2024 Rarotonga Club 15s premiership title with a hard-fought 32-27 win on Saturday at Teimurimotia Park in Titikaveka. Solomone Taukei reports.

This closely contested match, as anticipated, was full of intensity, drama, and remarkable plays from both teams.

From the outset, it was clear that this encounter would be a battle of the titans.

The Eels struck first, with their fullback Nathan Nabou crossing the line in the third minute, followed by a successful conversion from Viiga Reupena.

However, the Panthers quickly responded, showcasing their resilience and tactical prowess. By the 24th minute, they had taken the lead with tries from halfback Jason Potoru and midfielder Al Momoisea, complemented by a conversion from Daniel Toa.

As the first half progressed, the Panthers extended their lead to 15-7 with a penalty goal from Toa.

But the Eels, not to be outdone, rallied with a try from Ioane Moore and a spectacular 50-metrs drop goal by Reupena, levelling the score at 15-15 at halftime.

The second half saw the Eels come out with renewed determination. Nabou scored his second try, with Reupena’s precise kicking adding the extra points. Substitute winger Josh Koroi also found the try line, pushing the Eels ahead to 29-15.

Despite the Eels’ increasing lead, the Panthers continued to fight back. Al Momoisea added another try to his tally, and with Toa'’ conversion, the gap narrowed to 29-22.

In the dying moments of the game, with the Eels reduced to 13 men due to two players being sent to the sin-bin, the Panthers sensed an opportunity. Pita Senibiakula crossed the line for the Panthers’ fourth try, but it was too little, too late.

Reupena’s crucial 35-metre penalty kick earlier had secured a narrow lead for the Eels, and they held on to it, winning the match 32-27.

Reflecting on the game, Eels’ coach Clive Nicholas expressed his pride and gratitude.

“This win is humbling for me, knowing all the hard yards we’ve been through the season,” Nicholas said. “I’m grateful to everyone — players, management, the village of Avatiu, and all our supporters and sponsors for standing by us through thick and thin.”

Despite the loss, the Panthers showcased an impressive performance. They dominated the set-piece scrums and line-outs, particularly in the second half when playing with a strong breeze at their backs. However, two crucial missed opportunities to score from penalty sideline kicks for touch left them ruing what might have been.

The standout performers for the Panthers included skillful number eight Filimoni “Bilson” Laitiavura, tough loose forward Filipo Schmidt and their strong running front rowers Lua Tua and Kana Nga. Al Momoisea, who scored two tries, also stood out with his dynamic play.

For the Eels, the maestro goal kicking first five eighth Viiga Reupena, try scoring fullback Nathan Nabou and their energetic loose forwards captain Li Ponini, Wally Tangata and Josh Motu, who tackled their hearts out, stood out.

Ben Koteka, CIRU development manager, acknowledged everyone involved in making the 2024 season a success.
